A Minimalist Tone

VS House is a family home in the outskirts of Ahmedabad. Originally a 4-bedroom house built around 7 years ago, it has been retrofitted into 3 bedroom to incorporate the client’s other requirements.

The house is designed with a minimalist tone. Instead of adding more elements, focus has been given on the nature of the materials used to finish the insides, which create the entire ambience. Emphasis is on the visual and tactile journey through the house, drawing attention to the flooring, walls, and ceilings, which take a grey colour to keep the tone monochromatic, hence, making the wooden furniture elements pop out. A majority of the wood used in the project is reclaimed and the walls are finished with a lime wash. This entire palette has been chosen keeping locally available materials in mind.

Good design is generated from strong concepts that evolve as a response to various factors, and the manifestation of the summation of these ideas is what drives design across diverse typologies

The corner plot made more space available, which was used to design a gym and a jacuzzi spa. The entry was also completely redone with a higher boundary wall that conceals services within, and a larger covered parking space. The study, also an extension on the first floor (originally a large passage and a terrace next to it), has half its roof done from scratch in metal. This allowed for the curved ceiling that opens up to the morning light, and creating a feeling of entering a den.
